Global Warming - the SUN is to blame?!
Well, in the news today I heard a blurb about the sun getting hotter over the past "couple" years, and this was a major cause of global warming. I decided to do some of my own research. A quick Google search for "sun getting hotter" sure does pull up a lot of reference pages!
One of my favorite quotes is:
"Perhaps we are devoting too many resources to correcting human
effects on the climate without being sure that we are the major
contributor."
Taken from THIS report.
THIS report suggests that increased solar irradiance could add another 20%(!) to the rate earth is warming, AND that this is a natural cycle. It also points out that global warming due to burning fossil fuels is not universally accepted by scientist.
THIS report makes a comment about the sun "not being normal", although I'm not sure we've really been studying the sun long enough to be sure what normal truly is. It goes on to say the Mars polar cap has shrunk over the last 3 years releasing more carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases). To be fair, there is a GREAT interview with Sallie Baliunas further down where she says it's not likely the sun is the cause of the Martian pole melting, but then says Martian climate is "poorly understood", so who knows.
There is an interesting CO2 chart on the previous link which charts global temperature (supposedly) for the last 600 million years. Doesn't seem much change in the "pattern" of the temp, but the CO2 levels were 10 times higher back then?! It also mentions an ice age which caused 60% of all marine invertebrate to go extinct... I wonder what that would mean to if 60% of our species became extinct. I bet "life" would go on. Sounds like we're in a 10,000yr "warm" cycle that is about to go to 100,000yr glacial period. Fun.
I also tried to do a search for "sun NOT getting hotter", but didn't find any pages. If anyone has anything like that, I'd be interested.
