The earth is flat !

Yes, yes.... the video is coming, I promise. But in the meantime there is so much going on I am compelled to write.

It's time to plug in your brain.

Did you know the earth is flat?!
Of course you did! Just stand outside in Kansas or the African Sahara and LOOK for yourself! The land just stretches on forever. Flat. Well, except for a few mountainous bumps here and there, but obviously quite flat.
How could you think otherwise? In fact, thousands of scientists agree!
Actually, more than that... most likely 95% of the world population agrees!
Well, at least two thousand years ago. EVERYONE just *KNEW* the earth was flat.
Why? What proof did they have? It looked flat to them? Everyone else they knew also agreed it was flat? They heard scientists tell them so?

For what ever reason(s) they believed, it was a false belief... something every person on earth just took as solid fact without question. Same could be said for the old belief that the earth was the center of the universe. In fact, there were times when people were imprisoned and even burned at the stake for suggesting the earth revolves around the sun, and this was only 500 years ago!

Were scientists wrong in their "proofs" or assertions that the earth is the center of the universe, or that earth is flat, or that the atom is the smallest possible particle, or that you could reach China by sailing west from Europe (Columbus, Cabot), etc.
I could go on and on with ideas and assumptions that were taken as fact at some time in history. The REAL fact is that scientists sometimes get it wrong and the entire population of the planet goes on to take it as fact... until it's proven to be incorrect.

Something does not seem right with that method.
How many fingers am I holding up right now? One or two? I say 'one', if you disagree, PROVE me wrong.

Obviously some things are taught as fact, when they really might not be.

Why do I bring this up?

I'm amazed at how much BS these scientists have been spewing at us over the last several hundred years that turn out to be incorrect, yet we are just now realizing they weren't quite right... or flat out wrong. It makes me wonder what they are telling us about our world today that will proved to be totally bogus in a year, 10 years, or 100 years. Why are we taking everything they say as FACT?

Below I will continue to add interesting articles of things we've been told are fact, and then later found out it was not true, or possibly not true. After all, can we every REALLY know for sure?

So, as a young kid in the 70's I was facinated by dinosaurs! What are they? Giant lizards.... reptiles. I know. I loved them. I read ALL about them! Oh, but wait. In the 90's there is talk that perhaps they had more in common with birds than reptiles. Well, at least many of them?

September 4, 2005: Fossil evidence is now irrefutable
October 6, 2004: T.Rex cousin had feathers
1996: Dinos not directly to birds, but maybe the same ancestory?
November 24, 1995: Birds are dinosaurs
November 21, 1995: "Some researchers today do not agree that dinosaurs gave rise to birds, and are working to falsify this theory, but so far the evidence for the theory has swamped their efforts"

Yes? No? Maybe so?
I can't wait to see what we'll find next that proves everything we know all wrong again.

And here is a bit of news today that caused me to write on this topic in the first place.

Fossilized dropping show dinosaurs grazed
"Few scientists had ever thought that dinosaurs grazed, because there was no evidence that grasses existed that long ago."

What REALLY bothers me about this is that because there was (apparantly) no proof of grass that scientists just assumed it didn't exist!?

And we go back to:

Because there was no proof the earth was round, we all thought it was flat.

Because (even as late as the mid 1800s) there was no proof of germs being spread from person to person, they must not be able to... and so hospitals were not routinely kept clean. People were dying because of demons, or the fact that the beds were not lined up in exact rows.

Because we have not found proof of WMD in Iraq, none most have ever been there.

Because the North Pole is charged with a negative magnetic charge, it must have always been. (or not)

This leads to other questions...
If the poles swap every so often, during which time earth heats WAY up, due to solar radiation bombardment, then isn't this a likely (major) cause of global warming? If this is a regular event on earth and is due to happen within 1000 years, what does it really matter if we use an extra can of hair spray or not? The poles will swap, many species will die, earth will continue on, just as it has again and again in the past.

... AND... while we're on this topic of dinosaurs, and ancient facts that turned out to not be facts at all...

I come across this article:
Forget Everything You Think You Know About Oil
"If you believe that oil is a fossil fuel, be prepared to have your thoughts turned upside down."

Which goes on to suggest that it's most likely oil was not produced by decaying dinosaur matter, but rather a continuous process formed by earth.

Of course, like everything else I've pointed to above... Who's to say what the REAL truth is?! I don't think we're ever going to find 100% proof oil came from the decaying matter of millions of years ago, because we weren't around millions of years ago to put decaying matter in special spot and say "check this in a few million years". Until we find some kind of PROOF that earth creates oil from some other process we can't be 100% sure of that either. The fact is... even if we DO find proof of one of the above, it does not automatically invalidate that some oil could not have been formed by some other method as well!

In 1956 M. Hubbert wrote a (now well-known) paper about "peak oil" which shows an interesting chart of Illinois oil production between 1900 and 1950 where two peaks are seen. The first is due to oil being discovered by geological outcroppings, and those sites continued to be mined with dwindling results over years, until new technology (seismograph) discovered much more in 1937. What *I* see from this is that we have discovered a certain amount of oil now, with today's technology, but that doesn't mean in 50 years we won't have some new technology that will uncover 400 times as much oil as we've found today! -- which is about the ratio of oil found in Illinois during that first and second discovery.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying we should not find alternative energy sources, because I certainly do think we should! Oil might very well be extremely limited at this point, non-renewable, and we've found all there is to be found.

The point I'm trying to make with this WHOLE thread is "How do you really know?" What you know today could be made obsolete tomorrow.

Along the same lines... It turns out that Thankgiving turkey doesn't cause drowsiness after all.

http://physorg.com/news8453.html

The story goes on to say that other foods like beef and soybeans even have higher concentrations of tryptophan.

Again, what we once all took for granted because "they said so", turns out to not be correct.
